Welcome on the website of Quinta da Foz Furtado, located at the boarder of the lovely little mountain village Rio de Mel, situated in the Serra da Estrela in the middle of Portugal.

An unique spot to learn in a very relaxed and pleasant way more from the superb nature, authentic mountain villages and old places of Portugal.

The Quinta is available as Luxury Bed & Breakfast location as from February 2008, where a warm welcome awaits you by Hans & Els Ballast. However, guests of the Quinta made us clear that B & B location is not a really good qualification, because we offer a lot more than a stay for the night followed by a breakfast.

If desired we can serve lovely meals to you. In the mornings an elaborate breakfast can be arranged at the time you wish, while in the evenings an excellently prepared meal can await you. If you want to stay at the Quinta a lunch can also be arranged for. But if you wish it's also possible to prepare your own meal in the luxury outside kitchen.

Depending on the season, the meals will be served on the cozy terrace in front of the centuries old Adega, or in the inside dining room. From both these locations you'll be able to enjoy the beautiful view over the valley, with as icing on the cake the tops of the Serra de Açor.

Rio de Mel (Freguesia de São Gião), as mentioned before, is located in the National Nature Reserve Serra da Estrela and is a small authentic Portuguese mountain village which can be your starting point for a wonderfull nature, sports or culture holiday.

The surroundings offer endless walking options; stunning tours, for example the Dão wine route; opportunities for horseback rides through nature; mountain biking routes; golf course, amongst others the 27 hole course of Montebelo near Viseu. But also a visit to the Roman excavations in Bobadela or Conimbriga are highly recommended.

During your stay we will be more than happy to provide you with all kinds of tips on specific events, directed towards your personal preferences. A lot of our guests are pleased to let us supply them with guided tours in nature or in one of the surrounding places.

For guests which don't like to drive themselves, we can arrange for a shuttle from and to the airport of Porto or Lisbon.

A good suggestion could be to fly to the airport of Lisbon, stay in a good hotel in Lisbon for a couple of days, get you picked up by us there, followed by a mid-week stay in our Quinta da Foz Furtado, followed by a transfer to Porto, for instance for a two days stay and fly home from the airport of Porto.

For suggestions how to organize such a trip we are gladly of help to you.

Sometimes special activities will be organized such as creative drawing & painting courses.
